Swapping a shower head is one of the few plumbing jobs that genuinely needs no plumber, no tools and no turning the water off at the mains. It takes about two minutes. Here is how, plus the one thing to check before you buy.

Check this first. If you have an electric shower — a white box on the wall with its own power switch, where the water heats as it flows — do not fit a water-restricting or filtered head. Reducing the flow on an electric shower can make it overheat and cut out. Those units are designed around their own head.

What fits what

Almost every handheld shower hose in the UK uses a 1/2 inch BSP thread, which is the standard. That means a replacement head will screw onto your existing hose without an adaptor, whether you have a mixer tap, a thermostatic bar valve or a power shower.

The exceptions are fixed rainfall heads plumbed straight into the wall or ceiling, which are a different job, and electric showers as above.

Step by step

  1. Unscrew the old head. Hold the hose in one hand and turn the head anticlockwise with the other. It is hand-tight, so it should come away without tools. If it is stuck with limescale, grip it through a tea towel for purchase, or wrap a cloth round it and use pliers gently.
  2. Check the washer. Inside the hose nut there is a small rubber washer. If it is flattened, cracked or missing, replace it — this is the cause of nearly every drip at the handle. New heads usually include one.
  3. Clear the thread. Wipe away limescale flakes so the new head seats flat.
  4. Screw the new head on by hand. Clockwise, firm but not forced. No tools, no PTFE tape needed — the rubber washer makes the seal, and overtightening cracks plastic threads.
  5. Run it and look at the joint. Thirty seconds on full. A drip at the collar means the washer is not seated — unscrew, reseat, try again.

Why a pressure-boosting head works

It is not magic, it is a smaller total opening. The head restricts the area the water passes through, so the same flow leaves at higher velocity, which feels stronger. Because you are using less water per minute to get that feeling, the water bill and the energy used to heat it both go down.

This works best on gravity-fed and combi systems with modest pressure. If you already have a pumped power shower at high pressure, the difference will be less dramatic.

Keeping it working

In a hard water area — most of southern and eastern England — limescale will block the nozzles within months. Two habits keep a head spraying straight for years:

  • Rub the nozzles. If they are silicone, run a thumb across them under the running shower once a week. Scale flakes straight off.
  • Soak it occasionally. Unscrew the head, sit it face down in a bowl of white vinegar for an hour, rinse well. Every few months is plenty.

If your head has filter stones or beads inside, they do not last forever either. When the water starts feeling the same as it did before, replace the cartridge or the head.

If water sprays from the hose where it meets the valve rather than at the head, that is a different washer and a different job — but still not one that needs a plumber.

Common questions

Will a new shower head fit my shower?

Almost certainly. Nearly every handheld shower hose in the UK uses a 1/2 inch BSP thread, so a replacement head screws straight on without an adaptor.

Can I fit one to an electric shower?

No. On an electric shower the water heats as it flows, so restricting the flow with a water-saving or filtered head can make the unit overheat and cut out. Those showers are designed around their own head.

Do I need PTFE tape or tools?

Neither. The small rubber washer inside the hose nut makes the seal, and overtightening cracks plastic threads. Hand-tight is correct.

How do I stop limescale blocking it?

If the nozzles are silicone, rub a thumb across them under the running shower once a week. Every few months, unscrew the head and soak it face down in white vinegar for an hour, then rinse well.
